...changing yourself...

Freedom Fridays: An Introduction

Okay. "Freedom."

We throw the word around every day. We read about it in history books. We hear it used in politics and foreign policy. We debate and philosophize it until we're sick to death of it, and, more often than not, we can't tell what it really means. There doesn't seem to be one universal definition for the word. So, the question remains...

What does freedom mean to you?

I've been exploring this concept in-depth for literal decades, and I could do a treatise on it: semantics, symbolism, cultural origins, social implications, and what it says about us as an evolving species.

...but...

I'm not going to. Or, rather, I should say that I'm not going to do it all at once.

Over the next few weeks, months, even years, I will be sending out posts on Fridays that are dedicated to "Freedom". This will be anything from reviews of products & services that make life easier & more efficient in achieving our dreams to inspired sources: books, talks, stories, and more. I won't post every week, but I should manage most weeks.

In between, there'll be plenty of time to share what freedom means to you, me, and, yes, humanity. And I'm not doing it fully on my own. That's because I want to hear from you. I want to know what you think. Share your insights. Share your inspirations. Share your dreams and what achieving freedom in your life looks like....and what it means to you. I hope you'll join me.

Feel free (oy) to get the conversation started in the comments below. And have a great weekend! I hope it's inspiring.

Inspiration Quote Tuesday: To Fulfill our Destiny...

"Dreams are part of our heart and soul. Our dreams go to the depth
of our thoughts, wants, and needs to fulfill our destiny.
In order to fulfill our destiny, we must fulfill our dreams."
~J.R. Davis
The Burn is over, and I can already tell the difference. Energy and drive to continue with my dreams and help others fulfill theirs is one of the greatest gifts the Playa can give. What kinds of dreams would you like to fulfill? What's your destiny?

Inspiration Quote Tuesday: No Limits But the Sky

"Believe there are no limits but the sky."
~Miguel de Cervantes
I'm stepping off the train in Reno for the final leg of my journey to Burning Man! This is my 7th year (non-consecutive). People ask why I keep coming back to this event each year. It's certainly not because it's inexpensive. Among a host of other things, Burning Man is inspiration for me. And that's why I chose this quote. When I am on that Playa, covered in dust, looking around at the lights, the art, the people who strive to live, and, yes, that sky...well, I get to see no limitations...on our dreams, what we can accomplish...everything. Anything is possible. You are pure potential (Martin de Maat).

Have an amazing week!

Inspiration Quote Tuesday: Self-expression

"We but half express ourselves, and are ashamed of
that divine idea which each of us represents."
~Ralph Waldo Emerson
I'm getting ready to go radio silence for the next few weeks, heading to Burning Man. In the meantime, I want share this great quote by Emerson. I head to a place where self-expression and our divine self, the part of us which is tapped into our truest self, is not only respected, but encouraged. Where do you find such encouragement? Or, like the above, are you afraid to express what is your true, divine, expressive self? Are you ashamed of your dreams? We'll be covering that over the next few months. Enjoy pondering this quote in the meantime!

Remember you are pure potential!

Inspiration Quote Tuesday: Rockefeller on Success

"If you want to succeed you should strike out on new paths, rather than travel the worn paths of accepted success."
~John D. Rockefeller

Who better to turn to for advice in alternative paths in business and entrepreneurialism than one of the most successful persons in our modern history!

The Thing about Burning Man

What is it about Burning Man?  Why we all come back looking exhausted & radiant?

I can't speak with absolute certainty, but I do know this:  It works on much the same principle of brainwashing as does the military & Jesus camps who, I might note, have some of the highest success rates of any organizations.  In this case, you can't help but love it.

It starts with a simple doctrine: Radical Self-Reliance....Thou shalt not MOOP.  MOOP being originally "Matter Out On the Playa" and becoming simply "Matter Out Of Place"....I like the second, because I think it can easily be said to follow the RSR Doctrine....anyone not following the doctrine could easily be said to be MOOP, an undesirable bit of stuff wandering about the playa waiting for someone else to take care of it.  Radical Self-Reliance is about knowing one's self well enough to prepare and take responsibility for our actions & choices, rather than relying on others to take care of you.  You bring the necessary supplies & shelter, clean up after yourself, and make sure that any ridiculous thing you do is at a level that you can handle without needing others to do it for you.

So one takes the doctrine & prepares.  Food, Shelter, First Aid....anything anyone can think of to go wrong & need.  There's even a guide to help you.  Believing oneself ready, you take your doctrine, supplies, fuzzies & glowies, and you head out.  And it is with your arrival to the great Black Rock City that the brainwashing begins.

The first thing that happens on your arrival in Black Rock City (BRC) is that you get hit with dust.  Lots of dust.  Dust storms.  Having believed yourself prepared, you say "No one told me about the--*khak!* *gack!* *gasp!*", your words cut off as another white out buffets you to & fro.  You cower in your tent, looking every bit as though you are experiencing the end of the world, breathing through a dust mask & peering out only occasionally with goggle-encased eyes, disbelieving that such a phenomenon can last through the entire DAY(??), and hoping that if your tent blows away, it won't decide to take you with it (I'm sure it's happened).  When you do emerge, everything you own is covered in dust...not a fine layer, mind you, but actual dunes.

At some point, usually mid-week, sooner if "letting go" is easy for you, you give up hope of ever being clean again...not for the rest of the week, mind you, but ever again in your life.  The dust has permeated every part of your being.  It has snuck through every battened down hatch of your stuff.  It is not only on you, it is in you, having crept into every orifice of your body, absorbing through skin, and casting everything in a slightly greyish tone.

This is the breakdown of self....and as you struggle on, RSR ever in the back of your mind, something amazing happens...

You stop caring.

You stop worrying about being clean, looking nice, being clean, whether you were properly prepared for this, being clean, your woes in the outside world, that your tent just blew away with your house keys....Did I mention being clean?  You just stop caring about that.

And what that gives you is the ability to care about something else.  To care - really care - about yourself, about others, about being part of a community.  You feel more yourself than you ever have.  You wander out into the desert, a dazed expression on your face, remembering that you got yourself into this and you must continue the doctrine.

And then another amazing thing happens.  Everyone you meet wants to hug you, feed you, give you treats, take care of you, body & soul, without - because you adhered to the doctrine - you ever asking them.  You wonder how the world could ever be different than this glorious display of love.  Why, life should always be like this, you think to yourself.

And despite the fact that you will return to the outside world in mere days, you know in your heart of hearts that it isn't the real world you are returning to.

Oh, and you get to see things set on fire.  That is totally freaking awesome.

That is what Burning Man is.

Form vs. Function: Phase 1 - The Poll

Hello, all.

I'm preparing an essay on Form & Function, specifically in how they pertain to image & how we look at ourselves.  Always the amateur scientist [Tangent: aren't all scientists amateur?  I mean, is the point of science monetary gain?  Too easy.], I decided to start with a big of statistic gathering.  I posted a poll on  my LinkedIn profile [see above link], and so far I've gotten a few responses and some interesting data....

Still, I need more.  The poll is a single question, and should take no time at all.  Just click the question below.  Also, feel free to leave comments, either on LinkedIn or here as to your thoughts on the matter.  I love free input.
